Deregulated Energy States

Updated: March 16, 2017

Deregulated energy states are states where consumers have a choice in which utility to use to purchase their electricity and gas. Because of constantly changing laws, which states are deregulated energy states changes regularly. In many states, partial deregulation only allows choices for residents in certain cities or areas, or only if they have certain public utility providers for their electric and gas. In others, either gas or electric is deregulated, but they don’t live in a fully deregulated energy state.

Note: this is a list of deregulated energy states for consumers, not commercial or industrial electric and gas users. If you have a business that you think will benefit from deregulated electric or gas utilities, make sure to contact your utility provider to see about options.
